* Part of the reason for its value is Einstein’s inscription, which states that the image was a gesture to all of humanity, and this has been interpreted as his comment on the rise of McCarthyism in America. During this time, there was increasing pressure on everyone, including academics, to inform on colleagues who were thought to have communist leanings. For Einstein this must have had unpleasant overtones of the rise of Nazism that drove him to leave Germany for America in 1933.

† Hendrik Lorentz (1853-1928) derived the transformation equation to fit the results of the Michelson-Morley experiment. The transformation suggested that bodies in motion were compressed, though why this should happen was a mystery. Einstein’s discovery of the Lorentz transformation as a natural consequence of special relativity provided the theoretical underpinning.
